Every car owner has been there. You find a part online, the price looks right, you place the order — and when it arrives, it doesn’t fit. Wrong size, wrong connector, wrong side. Now you’re back to square one with money already spent.
This is one of the most common and most frustrating problems Caribbean car owners face, and the good news is it’s completely avoidable once you know what to look for.
Start With Your VIN Number Your Vehicle Identification Number is the single most important piece of information when sourcing a car part. This 17-character code is unique to your specific vehicle and contains everything — the make, model, year, engine type, trim level and country of manufacture. You’ll find it on your dashboard near the windshield, inside the driver’s door frame or on your registration documents.
Any reputable parts supplier should be asking for your VIN before confirming a part. If they aren’t — that’s a red flag.
Know Your Engine Code Two vehicles can look identical on the outside but have completely different engines under the hood. A 2015 Toyota Corolla with a 1.6L engine and one with a 1.8L engine will require different parts for the same repair. Always confirm your engine code before ordering — your mechanic or a quick look under the hood can confirm this.
Left vs Right, Front vs Rear This catches people out more than you’d think. When we say left and right on a vehicle, we mean from the driver’s perspective sitting inside the car — not standing outside looking at it. Always double check which side you need before submitting your order.
OEM Part Numbers If you already have the old part in hand, look for the part number printed or engraved on it. This is the most accurate way to source an exact replacement. Searching by part number eliminates compatibility guesswork entirely.
